Today, New York State has established and maintains minimum standards required by health insurance companies who provide health insurance policies for long-term coverage.

New York State has broken this coverage down into four very distinct classifications:

Long-term care; Nursing home and home care; Nursing home only; and Home care only

Today’s long-term insurance policies provide the most extensive coverage when it comes to long-term care and nursing services. The insurance department mandates that these policies be for a minimum of twenty-four months, consecutively and that they offer the following:

$100/day all care for nursing home services if sold in New York City Metropolitan areas including Suffolk, Richmond, Queens, Rockland, Westchester, New York, Nassau, Bronx, and Kings. /day all care for nursing home services if sold in all other locations in New York State.

Plus…. /day custodial care service coverage for private homes.

Please note that nursing home insurance can only be used for those who:

Do not wish to receive long-term care services within their home.

Have enough resources to pay for their own home care services.

When the policyholder is confined to a nursing home insurance policies must provide a minimum of 12 consecutive months custodial care service coverage of no less than /day for nursing home only.

When it comes to buying coverage, it is best to remember that if you may require home health care services in the future do not buy the nursing home only policy.

The Home Care Only policy has very limited coverage and should only be considered by those who:

Have no desire or intentions of ever entering into a nursing home.

Have already purchased a nursing home policy and want to add a home care benefit.

Home care insurance only must run 12 months, consecutively, with custodial care benefits of not less than /day in a private home.

As with the nursing home only insurance policy, home care insurance only policy many not be a good choice if you suspect you may require nursing home coverage in the future.
